About You

You run a business that employs people to help you deliver the service or product you have developed.  It doesn’t matter whether you are a smaller or larger SME, operate in the ‘business to business’ market or ‘business to client’, or operate in the private or ‘not for profit’ or charitable sectors.  What you all have in common is ’employees’ paid or voluntary and you know, think or feel that there are ways in which you must manage these people in order that you don’t fall foul of the huge amount of employment legislation and end up being hauled up in front of an employment tribunal or civil court for ignoring –  or, by incorrectly interpreting – employment legislation.  The exposure could damage your business in the eyes of your customers or stakeholders and may lose you some good employees too.  To add insult to injury you may end up having to pay £K’s.

Most of you will have engaged with an Accountant on setting up your business and you may well be using the same person to help you with ensuring employees have their basic terms and conditions correctly captured in a statement, you may even have a handbook setting out how to book holiday or report sickness absence, ‘the rules’.  Your Accountant is also likely to run your payroll for you.  Some of you may have the same or a similar service provided by your Lawyer.  So, you might be wondering why you would need to hire an HR specialist to help you get the most our of your business?

Those of you who have worked with an HR professional will know the valuable benefits of having tailored solutions (contracts, policies and procedures etc) to keep your organisation operating as lean as possible whilst still engaging with your employees who feel as passionately as you do about doing a good job and, as a result, enhancing your organisation’s performance ahead of your competitors.

You will also know that as well as enhancing your business employees can, sadly, ruin your credibility.  Employees can also give you untold grief in trying to manage their poor performance or correct their poor attitude or behaviour and while you are worrying about managing them ‘properly’ you are taking your eye off driving the business.
